Group PPO health insurance – is it an option for a “Group of One”?

THE CLOCK IS TICKING

There are many reasons you chose to be an independent practice owner: You cherish your freedom, you like managing your own business, you prefer to see patients on your terms – offering the type of care you deem best.

On the other hand, as an independent practice owner, there is one area where you may sometimes feel you are at a disadvantage – that is, when it comes to trying to secure your own health insurance.

Group PPO Coverage May Be Possible

Many independent practice owners feel they would like to have the benefits of group PPO health insurance – affording them greater flexibility and fewer restrictions. But the very word “group” leads them to believe this is simply not an option.

For some independent practice owners that could change.

Individual Freedom, Group Benefits

There is a little-known waiver to current guidelines that may be able to provide independent practice owners with access to high quality group PPO health insurance.

Under the current guidelines, if a group plan is offered, most carriers require that 75% of employees must participate in the plan. However, if you qualify for this waiver, you would not need 75% of employees to participate in the group plan. There would be no minimum number required to participate.

Welcome to a Group of One

This means you could be eligible for group PPO health insurance for yourself alone – as a “group of one.” That could help many independent practice owners and their families better manage health insurance costs and provide more comprehensive benefits than an individual HMO plan.

Another Waiver to Help Manage Costs

There is an additional waiver that may help independent practice owners. Under the same guidelines, if a plan is offered, employers must pay 50% of employees’ premiums. However, if you qualify, that 50% contribution would not be mandatory. You could contribute as much – or as little – as you want.

To be eligible for the waivers, you must have a tax I.D. number and one full-time employee other than yourself. It’s important to note, the waivers are only available for a limited time. Our deadline to assist you is December 12th, 2018. That will be the last day we can accept applications.

To learn more about the waivers and to see if you qualify, feel free to speak with a TMA Insurance Trust advisor who will be happy to provide further details. Please contact us without delay so that we can process your application before the deadline.
