There are some people who believe that if they don’t buy health insurance during the Open Enrollment period at the end of the year, they won’t be able to get health insurance until open enrollment begins again. But for physicians in certain circumstances, health insurance may be available at other times. In fact, you may be eligible right now to review your coverage and make changes.
Individuals May Qualify for Special Enrollment
Some physicians may qualify for a special ACA enrollment period if they meet certain extenuating circumstances. If any of the following events take place during the year, you can take advantage of a special enrollment period to add family members to your plan:
- Get married
- Have a child
- Adopt a child
- Become a foster parent
- Become responsible for child support
Additionally, if you lose your current health coverage during the year due to the following, you can obtain coverage during a special enrollment period:
- Loss of dependent status
- Moving out of state
- Loss of employer coverage
For those who qualify due to these circumstances, there is a 60-day period for special enrollment from the date of the qualifying event. We can help you make the right choices for health insurance if you qualify for a special enrollment period.

Short-Term Solutions for Temporary Coverage
In certain circumstances, short-term health insurance may be the best option for you. However, these circumstances are very limited, and short-term health insurance is not an option that you should consider for an extended period of time. Here’s why: short-term health insurance plans do not cover pre-existing conditions. Most of these plans also do not cover maternity care, mental health care, and other preventative care. These plans can, however, provide some stop-gap protection for a 30- to 60-day window, providing coverage for an unexpected serious illness or accident. If you are suddenly without health insurance coverage because of a change in employment and other options are not available, short-term coverage may be a temporary option that can offer some protection.
