You’ve invested years of rigorous study and tireless dedication to become proficient in your field. With your professional life on an upward trajectory, it’s essential to ensure that you are helping to protect the income you’re working so hard for.
The TMA Member Short Term Disability Insurance plan is an affordable financial tool that residents and young physicians can use to help protect their incomes if a serious illness or injury keeps them from practicing.
Affordable Income Protection
As a young resident or physician, you’re likely juggling many financial responsibilities, and going without an income for even a short period of time could have devastating consequences on your finances.
Here is why enrolling in the TMA Member Short Term Disability Insurance plan makes sense:
- TMA members under age 55 are guaranteed acceptance for coverage of up to $1,500/week, with coverage available for up to $2,500/week with underwriting.
- Affordable premium rates - No rate disparity between male and female members.
- Benefits are paid directly to you, and you receive them for up to 13 weeks.
- Partial disability is covered. You don’t have to be completely unable to work to receive benefits.
- Two versions of the plan are available, distinguished by the elimination periods:
- Option 1: Coverage begins on day one for an accident and after 7 days for an illness.
- Option 2: Coverage begins after 7 days for either an accident or an illness.
If you’ve secured long term disability coverage through your employer, you may have to wait up to 180 days before receiving benefits. Our TMA member plan can begin paying benefits from day one. And unlike an employer plan, this coverage can follow you throughout your career as long as you are a member of TMA.
A Plan for Planning a Family
Adding another person to your family increases the financial demands on your income and magnifies its importance to your family’s well-being. Short term disability insurance can be a strategic component in the career and family planning of young physicians.
The TMA Member Short Term Disability Insurance plan covers pregnancy, before and after childbirth, even without complications. If you are a TMA member under age 55, you are guaranteed acceptance for up to $1,500 a week in benefits.
In order to be eligible for this benefit, members must be enrolled in the TMA Member Short Term Disability Insurance plan for at least 12 months before becoming pregnant. After 12 months of enrollment, pregnancy benefits include up to 2 weeks prepartum, up to 6 weeks postpartum, and up to 8 weeks for a C-section.
While pregnancy introduces a host of adjustments and uncertainties, our tailored short term disability insurance plan can help ensure that your financial stability remains a constant as you and your family focus on the joys of this special time in your life.
